Applying to UMD as an International Student

Visit the Office of Undergraduate Admissions to view information about
application deadlines and transfer requirements.

Please note that international student applicants must apply by the March 1 priority deadline for fall admission consideration and the August 1 priority deadline for spring.

Transfer Credits

The University of Maryland awards transfer credit for courses taken at international post-secondary educational institutions recognized by the ministry of education in the respective country. Transfer courses must be similar in scope, content and level to courses offered at UMD for transfer credit to be awarded. Pre-Transfer Advisors cannot evaluate international coursework. Further information is available through
Transfer Credit Services.

  • You may view UMD's Transfer Course Database to see if coursework from your institution has been evaluated.
  • You may submit your coursework to be evaluated if needed. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions completes an initial review of the international transcript received to determine which courses may be accepted for transfer and the number of credits awarded for each course. This review will begin after all required documentation is received and the student has confirmed their admission to the University.

For more information, contact Ms. Tamarie Tomaskie in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

English Language Requirements

All students at UMD are expected to read, write and speak English fluently. International students must demonstrate a proficiency in the English language by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Test System (IELTS). Required scores and contact information is available online through the International Student & Scholar Services.

Transfer students who have completed an associate's degree have demonstrated proficiency.

Note: Students who will be awarded a degree from the U.S., United Kingdom, Anglophone Africa, Anglophone Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and the Commonwealth Caribbean prior to enrolling in the University of Maryland are not required to submit TOEFL or IELTS.

Note: For US citizens or permanent residents with foreign credentials, if your native language is not English and you do not hold a degree from an institution in the US or one of the Anglophone countries and areas previously listed, you will be required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores.
